WHO ARE WE?

We are the River Cities Singletrack Serpents (RCSS) Composite team. A co-ed, youth mountain biking team comprised of private, public, faith- based, and homeschool student-athletes in grades 6-12 from the Mid-Ohio Valley area in West Virginia and Ohio. The team competes in the West Virginia Interscholastic Cycling League (WVICL), a league of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA). Founded in 2009, NICA develops interscholastic mountain biking programs for student-athletes across the United States. NICA provides leadership, services, coach licensing and training, insurance and governance for local leagues to produce quality mountain bike events.

NICA Mission

We build strong minds, bodies, character, and communities through cycling.

NICA Vision

Every youth is empowered to be part of a thriving and engaged cycling community.

NICA Values

  • Fun: NICA inspires friendship, joy, and adventure.
  • Inclusivity: NICA believes everyone should be able to participate in our programs and feel welcomed, respected and supported.
  • Equity: NICA is committed to fair treatment, equal access, opportunity, advancement and elimination of barriers to encourage participation for all.
  • Respect: NICA expects consideration for all others, oneself, and the outdoors.
  • Community: NICA unites diverse people, families and communities through cycling by creating fun and welcoming experiences.

Core Principles

  • Equality All student-athletes are treated equally. Team scores are a combination points scored by both boys and girls.
  • Inclusiveness All student-athletes participate 100% of the time. No one is “benched” and everyone is encouraged to try racing, irrespective of how fast – or slow – they may be.
  • Strong Body NICA emphasizes wellness through lifestyle, nutrition and exercise. Improving physical fitness and overall wellness are at the center of NICA’s training and education.
  • Strong Mind NICA student-athletes are students first. Our program encourages academic excellence.
  • Strong Character All student-athletes are expected to work hard, respect others and give back to their communities. Our programs encourage and provide opportunities for trail stewardship, bicycle advocacy and mentoring.

They guide every decision we make, how we act and conduct our team.
